British and American Studies in Telemark
The British and American Studies programme level 1 provides students with a foundation in British and American literature and culture and knowledge relating to British and American international relations. It also provides students with an understanding of English grammar, phonetics and the oral use of the language.
Target Group and Admission Requirements
Foreign students with an interest in language, literature and cultural topics who wish to acquire deeper knowledge of British and American Studies are encouraged to apply. Admission requirements: One year of studies at university level and a good level of English competency. (TOEFL equivalency score: 600)
Aim of the Programmes
The British and American Studies programme level 1 provides students with a foundation in British and American literature and culture and knowledge relating to British and American international relations. It also provides students with an understanding of English grammar, phonetics and the oral use of the language. Courses offer a unique perspective of the field of studies to students who are focusing on British and/or American Studies at their home institutions. The programme emphasises the use of the discipline in teaching and other contexts. These courses are offered both fall and spring on a rotational basis.
The level 2 programme serves as a continuation and specialisation of the first-year programme courses, and provides students with a more comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the similar themes. Students must have achieved a pass mark in the compulsory test in linguistics prior to enrolling on this programme. This programme of courses is offered on a rotational basis in the fall term.
Subject Areas
British and American language, literature and cultural studies. Students may enroll in one or more of the courses.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, seminars, written and oral project work and submissions. The language of instruction is English. Each course is of one semester’s duration, and includes both ongoing and final assessments. Students are also offered the opportunity to study in England for two weeks at the Norwegian Study Centre in York. Special fees apply.

Assessment Methods
Portfolio assessment, oral presentation, response papers, mid-term papers, final written, essay examinations. All assessed elements of the course must be passed to pass the course.
Further Studies
These programmes and courses may be applied to the BA in Language and Literature degree at Telemark University College, if studied with a specialisation in English, or may form part of other Bachelor degrees. See ‘Careers / further study’ under the relevant programmes.
These programmes are components of a Bachelor’s degree which provides the basis for admission requirements to Master’s degrees in English at other university colleges and universities. See ‘Career / Further Study’ under the Bachelor’s programme.
