Wireless network access

How to access the wireless network?

The college is a member of Eduroam (see external links). The wireless network is called "eduroam", it requires a password. ( The "HiT" -network (no password required) will be phased out from september 15th).You must configure your laptop (once) before you can access the network.

There are several ways to configure your laptop. We describe two: "automatic" or "manual". (See also external link if required.)

"Automatic" configuring of laptop with Windows operating system:

Download and run our

You may choose wether or not to store your password in Windows, and also @hit.no is added automatically (see more on this in the section "Connecting to..." below).

This program might not work on all PC's. Her are some known problems:

  • If you are using windows XP, make sure to install Service Pack 3 first
  • With windows XP your network card may need to be upgraded with the latest driver, so that it supports WPA2 - (even if SP3 is installed )
  • With windows Vista, the program might have to be installed with "administrator" rights
  • If all fails, try the "manual configuration" (or bring the laptop to us as a last resort)

"Manual" configuration:

For PCs with windows or other operating systems. We have translated the instructions for configuring a laptop with windows 7. Laptops with other operating systems are somewhat similar. Use the documents in norwegian (see norwegian site), or se the external link for other examples in english.

Connecting to the "eduroam" network

  1. On login to "eduroam", you must type (your) "username@hit.no" (as opposed to your "username" only)
  2. Note that the password is CASE SENSITIVE...

Note:

You may configure your personal laptop to remember your credentials, s.t. the network connects automatically. This is convenient, but not recommended IF you sometimes lend your laptop to others (since their printing or use of the internet will appear as yours...). Also: if your laptop is stolen or lost, you must immediately change your password.

Access and services

Laptops have access to local wireless networks at all campuses. (Also, certain access points are cabled.) Some access points have a worklight and power outlet for your laptop. Wireless services are similar to those you find at the college dormitories, i.e. basic internet access (note that not absolutely all known internett services are available at the present time). All college services will encrypt your user name and password.

As a member of Eduroam you may use your laptop at other institutions who are also members- with your username@hit.no.

Capacity/speed

Capacity will vary with distance to local access point, and with number of connected users.
