Advice on writing a thesis
You can find practical tips on study technique, how to find and use information, writing and citing techniques in web guides such as Search & Write and VIKO.
Referencing and literature lists
You are required to cite the literature you have used in your assignment or thesis. The reason for this is to give credit to the original authors and to let others find your sources.
Quotations need to be clearly marked in the text.
The source of the quotation should be given in the text and in the literature list.
Referencing should be done in a standardised way through the use of a referencing style.
There are many standardised referencing styles available. TUC does not have a required style.
It is important that you chose a style and use it consistently.
Check with your faculty or institute to see if they have a preferred style.
The most-used referencing styles
Harvard Alphabetical style
APA Alphabetical style based on Harvard Style
IEEE Numerical style. Used mainly in techonology
Vancouver Numerical style. Used mainly in biomedicine
Referance management with EndNote
TUC has a licence to EndNote which staff and students can use both on and off campus.
See the the EndNote page for information about downloading the program and its use.
Help with information searching, citing and the use of EndNote
Contact the Library if you need help or guidance.
Staff and students can also book a session with a librarian.
