BA Visual Art & Design

The aim of the programme is to establish fundamental competence in visual communication within different forms of expression, as well as to develop understanding and insight into aesthetic theory, basic research theory and methodology together with contemporary forms of cultural expression viewed in the light of art history. The products of the student’s own creative efforts are an important aspect of the programme, and the relationship between theory and students’ own practical-aesthetic work is fundamental. The ability to understand, create and mediate visual messages is decisive in today’s society.

The study programme provides basic skills in art and design. Creative activities and practical problem-solving is important. Students will learn aesthetic skills and acquire knowledge of product development and aesthetic theory. Through the development of ideas, visualisation, and practical work using a variety of materials students will become familiar with the design process and develop the ability to give objects form and expression. Practical and theoretical knowledge about art, design and visual communication provides a basis for reflection, evaluation and dissemination of their own and others' work. Use of ICT and digital media constitutes an integral part of the programme. Core areas of the study programme are understanding art, visual communication, design and arts and crafts.

The first and second year of the study programme is common to all the programme’s students and consists of basic subjects such as drawing, colour theory and modelling, product and graphic design and art history. In the third year, students will create their own subject profile by selecting a specialisation course: Digital Image Processing and Visual Communication; Clay - Art and Design 1; Textiles, Art and Design; Wood and Metal – Art, Crafts and Design; Drawing and Image Communication.

Career opportunities/Further studies

The programme provides a good basis for the graduate’s own creative work, product development, the communication of knowledge in public and private institutions, and consultation services where there is a requirement for aesthetic competence. The programme will prepare the students to work in large and small enterprises and in the public sector in positions where visual competence is required to carry out their duties effectively. The programme may also be used as a basis for advanced training for students’ own creative artistic or handicraft activities. With its option of various types of specialisation in the final year of study, the programme can provide suitable competence in mediation and information for use in situations where visual communication plays a major role. If graduates have also completed a postgraduate teaching programme they will be qualified to teach in schools. Completion of the programme also qualifies students for admission to the MA in Art and Design Education.
