History of Ideas, 1 year programme

Students will learn how important ideas have developed from ancient times to the present day, particularly in the fields of philosophy, religion, art, politics and science. The programme is structured to increase students’ understanding by illustrating how important historical ideas form the basis for contemporary thought. Courses totalling 60 ECTS may be used to constitute the fourth year of the General Teacher Education programme. History of Ideas provides a broad overview which may be useful when teaching various subjects in schools, such as history, religion and literature.

Norwegian History of Ideas (10 ECTS)
People, Society and the State – the History of Political Ideas (10 ECTS)
Nature, Culture and People – view of human life and nature throughout history (10 ECTS)
Ideas and the Arts – The History of Aesthetic Ideas (10 ECTS)
The Age of Enlightenment (10 ECTS)
The Modern Breakthrough in Nordic Literature (10 ECTS)
Modernity and Cultural Criticism (10 ECTS)
British Romanticism (10 ECTS)
Classic Philosophy (10 ECTS)
Ibsen and the modern breakthrough (10 ECTS)
Folk Poetry & Folk Culture (10 ECTS)

Teaching and learning methods:

Reading material will include larger survey books. Lectures will focus on selected original works, seminars and supervised assignments. Each course is of one semester’s duration.

 
Career opportunities/Further studies

This programme qualifies graduates for further study in the history of ideas at The University of Oslo. It may also be studied as part of the BA in History, or other Bachelor’s degrees. Successful candidates will be qualified to teach the history of ideas or philosophy in secondary schools, and will have acquired a solid foundation for work in journalism and the media, as well as in the cultural sector.
