Culture and Management

The study programme will provide students with expertise in the topics culture, management, ethics, communication, marketing, dissemination and organisation.

The main focus of the study programme will be management, administration, communication and organisation in the cultural field. The study programme will provide an introduction to basic ethical, methodological and theoretical questions in the discipline, which will develop students’ capacity for ethical reflection and ability to make methodological choices.

Content - Module I

  • Overall objectives, structures and assignments for Norwegian cultural life (culture as a phenomenon, cultural policies and local arts and cultural life)
  • Arts and cultural management (cultural training, cultural events, financial management, sponsorship)

  • Cultural policy and public administration
  • Marketing, media and public relations
  • Management theory and human resource management
  • Cultural events and management
  • Cultural communication and management
  • Organizational culture and management theory
  • Cultural policy and public administration

The study programme is structured so that it should be possible to combine studies with full-time employment. It is based on a combination of teaching, supervision, self-study and assignments. The main bulk of the teaching is given during two 1-week workshops each semester. The web-based learning platform Fronter is an essential tool in the teaching and learning activities.

The workshops in the academic year 2010/2011 will be held in weeks 36 and 41 in the autumn semester and weeks 3 and 11 in the spring semester.

Career opportunities/Further studies

The study programme is aimed at municipal and county-level employees in the cultural sector; private and public art and cultural institutions and organizations; and cultural events promoters. The study programme will also be relevant for those with artistic and / or educational backgrounds, and for those who work with information and communication in general.
