Public Health Nurse

The intention of the Public Health Nurse study programme is to train nurses in promoting public health and in initiating preventative measures aimed at children, adolescents and their families.

Upon completion of the programme, they will be qualified to plan, initiate, carry out and develop health initiatives and preventative work in the municipal health services. The public health nurse is responsible for providing information on health matters as well as primary prevention. This work must take place at individual, group and community levels, and requires collaboration across professional fields and levels of administration.

Scope and organization

Sixty ECTS credits part-time over two years with a total of 17 one-week workshops (theory) and 10 weeks of nursing practice in the community health services. Instruction alternates between resource lectures, classroom teaching, project work and reflection groups.

 
Career opportunities/Further studies

The public health nurse’s areas of responsibility include work in public health centres, health services in schools, educational initiatives and environmental health work both nationally and internationally.
