Social Education Studies, part-time (starts 2011)

The Social Education Studies programme will provide students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that provide a solid basis for extending services to people with different kinds of disabilities. Their professional practices must be based on equality and respect for the integrity of the individual, and respect for the views and wishes of the clients. The social educator should have expertise that is built upon the relationship between theory and practical training throughout the programme, and should have developed the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical work.

The Bachelor’s degree in Social Education provides students with the necessary skills for working with people with various physical, mental and social disorders. The aim of the study programme is to train user-oriented, reflective professionals with solid values who are qualified to carry out methodical community habilitation and rehabilitation work, and nursing and care. The social educator helps people with disabilities to maintain their social rights and opportunities. The challenges that are posed by living in a multicultural society will also be focused on in this study programme. The study programme focuses on the resources, wishes and choices of the disabled; in this context it is important that professional social educators have knowledge of health-promoting and professional social work, and an understanding of the connection between methodological work, social processes and the life quality of vulnerable groups.

Career opportunities/Further studies

Graduates who have successfully completed this programme will receive official authorisation as social educators. Graduates will be able to seek positions as milieu workers within the health and social services, for instance, in home-based services, housing initiatives and institutions, and within the special health services. Furthermore, graduates may also seek positions in the educational and leisure sectors and with various employment projects. Social educators may also seek positions as caseworkers and supervisors. The Bachelor’s degree provides the necessary foundation for admittance to various Master’s degree programmes, such as the Master’s degree programme in Multicultural Preventative Care with Children and Adolescents at Telemark University College.
