General Teacher Education, 1-7, Notodden

Many are experts on teaching in the sense of having been taught. Becoming a good teacher is something quite different. There is no single recipe for crossing this gap. Becoming a teacher requires hard work, freedom from preconceptions and a thirst for professional challenges.

The General Teacher Education, 1-7, study programme will qualify successful candidates to teach in primary schools. The program emphasises basic training in key school subjects. In the second year of the study programme, students will be given the opportunity to select various teaching subjects to use as their combination of subjects.

Pedagogy in Teacher Education is a recurrent subject in the first three years of study. Mathematics and Norwegian are also compulsory subjects. Other relevant subjects that may be selected are: the natural sciences, music, social studies, English, arts and crafts, physical education and religion, beliefs and ethics. In the fourth year, students may also select relevant school subjects.

Students will receive supervision during their periods of teaching practice in all four years of the study programme. Telemark University College emphasises closeness between teacher and student.

Candidates will gain their teaching qualifications after four years of study. The study programme includes an introduction to basic ethics, research methodology and scientific theory.

In the third year of studies, students will complete their Bachelor’s Dissertation which comprises 15 ECTS credits. The Dissertation should include Pedagogy in Education and one or more other subjects.

Career opportunities/Further studies

The school is the most important workplace for the teacher who teaches from in primary school years 1 to 7. Teaching qualifications are also useful in several different types of careers in the fields of information and education. Teaching qualifications for teaching in the primary schools may be gained after four years of full-time studies / five years of part-time study.

Three years’ of study will provide candidates with the necessary requirements to gain admission to various Master’s degree programmes, depending on which subjects have been chosen; examples include Art and Design Education; Physical Education, Sport and Outdoor Life Studies; and Environmental Health for Teachers.
