Norcem
Norcem, Norway's sole cement manufacturer, produces some two million tons of cement per year. TUC cooperates with Norcem on increased utilization of alternative fuels and reduction of pollutant emissions.
Increased use of alternative fuels
Norcem has two cement production plants in Norway, one in Brevik and another in Kjoepsvik. Both plants utilize different types of alternative, partly CO2 neutral, fuels in the rotary kiln process. TUC, Faculty of Technology, has close cooperation with Norcem Brevik, aiming at optimizing the use of this type of fuels.
One PhD student is working full-time on this issue; see separate description in the research acitivity 'Alternative Fuels'.
CO2 capture
A cooperation between Tel-Tek, TUC and Norcem has been established to study capture of CO2 from cement kiln exhaust gases.
Emissions trading
Norcem is part of the Norwegian emissions trading regime. TUC and Tel-Tek have on several occasions assisted Norcem on CO2 reporting procedures, relevant laboratory analyses, and assessment of uncertainty in reported figures.
Emission reductions for other pollutants
TUC and Norcem have also cooperated on reduction in emissions of NOx, SOx, mercury and other heavy metals.
