The programme is currently awaiting approval by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) .

The Master’s programme in Inland Water Quality Assessment will be offered as a European joint Master’s programme by fifteen universities in Europe. Students will gain knowledge of what procedures are involved when assessing water quality in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive.

The programme consists of:

7 mandatory courses (40 ECTS): Environmental Law (6 ECTS), Ecological Risk Assessment (6 ECTS), Aquatic Ecology (6 ECTS), Bioindicators (6 ECTS), Environmental Informatics (4 ECTS), Biological Monitoring (6 ECTS), Chemical Monitoring (6 ECTS).

A project providing 30 – 60 ECTS credits. The size of the project will be decided by agreement between the supervising university and the student.

Elective courses (20 ECTS or 50 ECTS). Students may choose between elective courses (4 ECTS) offered at Telemark University College or at another university cooperating in the programme. Some of the elective courses are: Health Risks, Ecological Certification, Sewage and Wastewater Treatment, Groundwater, Ecotoxicology, Ecotox Tests/Bioassays, Molecular Ecotoxicology, Applied Aquatic Microbiology, Sedimentology, Biodiversity, Environmental GIS and Biostatistics.

Learning outcomes:

How to plan and carry out water quality assessments for inland water ecosystems using current EU-standards for sampling and analysis.
How to interpret water quality assessments and propose environmental management/risk management measures based on scientific methods.
How to present the outcome of the water quality assessment in a form which may be used for establishing management measures and for presentation to the public.

Teaching and learning methods:

Lectures, laboratory courses, seminars with student presentations, mandatory reports and papers. Some of the courses will be offered as E-learning courses.

Student exchange: During the Master’s programme students will be required to study at a minimum of two different universities in the countries cooperating in the programme: Sweden, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The student exchange will be financed through Erasmus agreements.
